FUNK ZONE WINE BOX
The Wine Box is an adaptive reuse project in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone that transforms a 22,082-square-foot site into a compact, highly activated venue for culinary arts, creative production, and social gathering. Constructed from repurposed shipping containers, the architecture establishes a flexible framework in which the built form defines edges rather than traditional enclosed interiors. The containers are strategically positioned to reinforce the street frontage while preserving permeability through the site, fostering a sense of visual continuity that reflects the industrial and informal character of the surrounding district.
Visually, the project is anchored by a prominent vertical shipping container tower that serves as a contemporary landmark. The exterior facades of these steel modules function as a large-scale urban gallery; vibrant, diverse murals and graphic art are applied directly to the corrugated surfaces. This creates a striking contrast between the rugged, weathered patina of the industrial materials and the refined, modern aesthetic of the curated artwork, echoing the district's evolution from a manufacturing hub to a creative destination.

The spatial organization centers on an open-air courtyard system featuring a blend of concrete paving and warm wood decking. The development houses a variety of artisanal studios, craft boutiques, and tasting spaces distributed across ground-level and elevated platforms. These units are characterized by expansive glass storefronts and industrial roll-up doors that dissolve the boundary between intimate interiors and the bustling outdoor plazas.
Circulation unfolds through a complex network of metal stairs and walkways, offering visitors varied perspectives of the nearby coastline and mountain backdrop. Retractable awnings and sculptural shade sails moderate the California sun, while integrated planters and festoon lighting soften the hardscape. The result is a socially oriented environment that emphasizes shared outdoor interaction and reinforces the Funk Zone’s culture of experimentation.
