The Toro Canyon Residence: Architectural Innovation on the Edge of Nature
Perched atop a narrow ridge in Montecito, California, the Toro Canyon Residence is one of our favorite projects at AB design studio. It represents what we believe is possible when thoughtful design meets challenging landscapes. Overlooking Santa Barbara’s stunning coastline to the south and framed by rugged mountains to the north, this residence captures the essence of our philosophy: to create architecture that integrates seamlessly with its environment. Balancing elegance with structural ingenuity, the Toro Canyon Residence takes inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright’s principles, while embracing contemporary design.
Embracing a Challenging Topography
The narrow ridge that supports the Toro Canyon Residence presented substantial constraints. With limited buildable area, we needed a creative approach to maximize functionality while respecting the natural landscape. Rather than imposing on the terrain, we viewed the residence as an extension of it, carefully placing each element to minimize disturbance to the topography.
At the heart of this project is a lap pool that runs along the spine of the ridge. By positioning the pool centrally, we were able to create a long internal courtyard, flanked by two wings of the residence. This central axis gave the home a sense of expansiveness, allowing us to achieve a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, and creating a feeling of continuity that grounds the residence in its natural surroundings. What could have been a limitation became a defining feature of the design, creating a unique spatial experience.

The Art of Cantilevering: Floating Above the Landscape
One of the most striking aspects of the Toro Canyon Residence is its extensive use of cantilevering. We designed each wing to extend dramatically over the sloping terrain, creating a sense of suspension that echoes Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. Cantilevering allowed us to maintain a delicate footprint, reducing the need for excavation and preserving the natural beauty of the ridge.
This floating effect emphasizes the home’s relationship with the landscape. Each wing projects outward, offering panoramic views of the coastline, mountains, and valleys below. We wanted the residence to feel as if it were hovering above the land, an effect accentuated by the flat rooflines that extend beyond the walls and draw the eye to the horizon.
Cantilevering wasn’t just an aesthetic choice; it was essential to preserving the site’s integrity while maximizing the interior space. By projecting over the landscape, we were able to create expansive living spaces without disturbing the terrain, staying true to our commitment to harmony with the environment.
Grounded by Stone: Vertical Elements as Anchors
While the residence’s cantilevered wings and flat roofs create an impression of lightness, we grounded the structure with a series of linear stone walls and fireplaces. These vertical elements are the only parts of the home that rise vertically, providing a powerful contrast to the horizontal lines of the cantilevered wings. Inspired by Wright’s use of stone in Fallingwater, these walls serve as visual anchors, lending stability and grounding the home to its setting.
The stone walls serve a dual purpose. Functionally, they help delineate different areas within the home, creating a natural sense of separation between private and communal spaces. Symbolically, they connect the residence to the earth, providing a counterbalance to the floating quality of the cantilevered wings. This interplay between lightness and solidity is a defining characteristic of the Toro Canyon Residence, giving it a sense of both permanence and freedom.
Additionally, these stone walls house the home’s fireplaces, infusing warmth and comfort into the living spaces. The combination of stone and fire within the home contrasts beautifully with the surrounding water and open-air elements, achieving a balanced design that integrates all of nature’s elements into the architectural experience.
Responding to the Ridge: A Dynamic Floor Plan
We knew that the undulating ridge required a design that could adapt to the natural contours of the land. Rather than imposing a flat structure, we opted for a stepped floor plan that flows with the landscape. By allowing the floor levels to step up and down, we minimized the need for grading and reinforced the connection between the home and its environment.
The stepped plan gives each area of the home unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. We positioned the northwest wing—containing the common areas—to capitalize on the coastline and mountain vistas. The living room, at the end of this wing, is the tallest space in the residence. As the floor steps down with the slope of the land, the roofline remains level, projecting dramatically toward the ocean and enhancing the openness of the space.
For the southeast wing, we prioritized privacy, designing it to house the bedrooms with views of a secluded, uninhabited valley below. This layout naturally separates public and private spaces, creating a thoughtful blend of openness and intimacy. By following the ridge’s contours, we were able to craft a home that feels attuned to its surroundings and rooted in place.
An Internal Courtyard: A Sanctuary Within
At the center of the Toro Canyon Residence is an internal courtyard, a tranquil space that provides privacy while enhancing the home’s connection to nature. Defined by the lap pool and flanked by both wings, the courtyard serves as a central gathering area where residents can enjoy the landscape from within the home’s walls.
This courtyard functions as an outdoor living room, sheltered from coastal winds and positioned to capture natural light throughout the day. It’s a place for reflection and relaxation, where we wanted the pool’s linear design to mirror the elongated form of the home. The result is a harmonious sanctuary that provides continuity and cohesion to the layout.
The courtyard also allows residents to feel connected to nature while enjoying the privacy of their own space. For us, the courtyard is not just an outdoor feature; it’s an essential part of the living experience that integrates architecture and landscape in a way that feels both intentional and serene.
Drawing Inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright
Our work on the Toro Canyon Residence was deeply influenced by the principles of Frank Lloyd Wright, particularly his philosophy of organic architecture. We saw in Wright’s ideas a reflection of our own commitment to design that is not imposed upon the landscape, but rather evolves from it. The residence’s emphasis on integration with nature, use of cantilevering, and strong linear forms pay homage to Wright’s Fallingwater, while adapting these concepts to the unique setting of the California coast.
For Wright, architecture was an extension of the natural world, and this belief shaped our approach to the Toro Canyon Residence. We prioritized harmony with the site, allowing the home to respond to the land rather than disrupt it. The cantilevered wings, stone walls, and stepped floor plan all embody Wright’s vision of architecture as an organic element that is at once rooted in and elevated above its environment.
But this residence is more than an homage. By combining Wright’s philosophy with modern materials and techniques, we created a space that speaks to today’s needs while honoring a legacy of innovation. The Toro Canyon Residence is our contemporary interpretation of Wright’s ideals, one that respects tradition while embracing modernity.

The Living Experience: A Dialogue Between Architecture and Nature
Living in the Toro Canyon Residence is an experience designed to foster an intimate connection with the natural world. Every room provides a different perspective on the landscape, from the expansive ocean views in the northwest wing to the secluded valley vistas in the southeast. We envisioned a layout that encourages residents to engage with their surroundings—whether by lounging in the courtyard, swimming in the lap pool, or relaxing in the cantilevered living room.
This layout fosters openness, where residents can feel both the expansiveness of the landscape and the intimacy of a thoughtfully designed home. By incorporating extensive glass elements, we ensured that the views are uninterrupted, letting natural light pour into the interior spaces. The result is a home that feels both expansive and welcoming, a sanctuary that allows residents to feel at one with the natural beauty around them.

Sustainability as an Essential Value
For us, sustainability isn’t just a feature; it’s a core value. In designing the Toro Canyon Residence, we approached each decision with a commitment to environmental stewardship. From the layout to the materials, we sought to reduce the home’s impact on the land and create a structure that would be energy-efficient and sustainable for years to come.
The residence’s design incorporates passive cooling and natural ventilation, allowing it to remain comfortable without excessive reliance on mechanical systems. The orientation of the wings and placement of windows were carefully planned to maximize cross-ventilation and provide shade, helping regulate temperatures naturally.
By choosing local materials, such as stone, we minimized transportation emissions while reinforcing the home’s connection to its setting. We see sustainability as a responsibility, and the Toro Canyon Residence reflects our belief that beautiful architecture and environmental responsibility can—and should—coexist.
