ADAPTED OFFICE BUILDING AS MULTI-FAMILY HOUSING COMPLEX

CASA RIVIERA

Casa Riviera is a testament to the transformative power of adaptive reuse in architecture. Once a tired, nondescript office building, it has been reborn as a vibrant boutique hotel; an evolution that not only rejuvenated the structure but also championed sustainability at every step.

By retaining and repurposing the existing building fabric, the project significantly minimized construction waste and preserved embodied energy, aligning with broader goals of reducing environmental impacts of construction. This resource-conscious approach exemplifies the “reduce, reuse, recycle” ethos, demonstrating how innovative design can breathe new life into old structures while honoring ecological responsibilities.

Architecturally, Casa Riviera embraces Santa Barbara’s iconic Spanish-Colonial Revival style, seamlessly blending historic character with modern luxury. Tucked just three blocks from State Street in the downtown core, the restored property now stands as a Spanish-style enclave that enriches the city’s heritage streetscape.

Its white stucco walls, red-tiled rooflines, and handcrafted iron details present an authentic revival of the beloved regional style, effectively converting a previously uninspired façade into an inviting, timeless presence. Inside, 24 studios, 4 one-bedroom suites, and 2 two-bedroom retreats are each designed as a stylish hideaway, uniting old-world charm with minimalist contemporary design.

Casa Riviera clearly demonstrates how thoughtful design can enhance and convert an existing structure into a Spanish-Colonial Revival gem, contributing meaningfully to Santa Barbara’s architectural legacy. In both its concept and execution, the project exemplifies quality architecture rooted in place and history, proving that preservation and innovation can go hand in hand.
