Mid-Century Modern Masterpiece Revitalized

At AB design studio, we pride ourselves on our ability to balance the architectural heritage of the past with the demands of contemporary living. Our project, the Mid-Century Modern Residence, located in Santa Barbara, is a prime example of how this philosophy comes to life. Originally designed by the renowned architect Noel D. Cooke in 1960, this home reflects the architectural innovation of the mid-century modern era, characterized by its clean lines, functional design, and an emphasis on integrating technology with the aesthetic needs of the time. Cooke, a significant figure in Santa Barbara's architectural history, is perhaps best known for his work on the Santa Barbara Yacht Club. His designs, including the Mid-Century Modern Residence, are an embodiment of the Case Study House movement, which sought to redefine residential architecture during the mid-20th century.

Our approach to this renovation was clear: to preserve the essence of the home’s original design while adapting it to meet the needs of modern living. By marrying the structure’s historical features with contemporary amenities, we created a space that honors the past while embracing the future.

Preserving Historical Integrity

The challenge of renovating a mid-century modern home lies in maintaining the integrity of the original design. Mid-century modern architecture is renowned for its simplicity, elegance, and functionality. The Mid-Century Modern Residence was no exception. It boasted iconic post-and-beam construction, tongue-and-groove ceilings, and expansive windows that brought the outdoors in. Our goal was to enhance these features while updating the home’s systems and layout for a 21st-century lifestyle.

We began by carefully assessing the original design elements that defined the home. The post-and-beam structure, in particular, was a signature feature that gave the home its distinctive mid-century modern look. This structural system, which uses exposed beams to support the roof, allows for open floor plans and expansive windows—key elements of mid-century design. By maintaining this structure, we preserved the architectural language of the home, allowing it to retain its mid-century character.

In addition to the structural elements, the tongue-and-groove ceilings were another defining feature that we preserved. These ceilings, composed of wooden boards that interlock to create a seamless appearance, add warmth and texture to the space. They are a hallmark of mid-century modern homes, and by maintaining them, we ensured that the home’s interior remained true to its roots.

Blending Traditional and Modern Materials

While preserving the home’s original features was a priority, we also sought to update the residence with materials that would bring a modern touch. The integration of traditional materials like wood and stone with more contemporary options allowed us to strike a balance between the old and the new.

We introduced board-formed concrete, a material that adds a modern, industrial feel to the space while complementing the home’s mid-century roots. The texture of the board-formed concrete contrasts beautifully with the smooth wood of the post-and-beam structure, creating a dynamic interplay between materials. This juxtaposition of textures adds depth and character to the home’s interior and exterior spaces.

Another key material that we incorporated into the design was dry-stacked stone. This traditional material was used to add texture and warmth to the home, particularly in areas like the fireplace and exterior walls. The dry-stacked stone complements the board-formed concrete and wood elements, creating a cohesive material palette that ties the entire design together.

Fine wood joinery was another element that we emphasized throughout the renovation. Wood, a key material in mid-century modern design, was used in the joinery of cabinetry, doors, and other built-in elements. By using high-quality wood and precision joinery techniques, we were able to create custom pieces that enhanced the home’s aesthetic while providing functionality.

Enhancing Livability: A Redesigned Lower Level

One of the key objectives of the renovation was to improve the home’s livability without compromising its historical integrity. To achieve this, we reconfigured the lower level of the house to create a luxurious master suite. Originally a small bachelor studio, the lower level was transformed into a spacious and comfortable retreat, complete with his-and-hers closets, a sitting area, laundry facilities, and a custom sauna.

The new master suite is a testament to our commitment to blending luxury with practicality. The space is designed to be both functional and beautiful, with carefully selected materials and finishes that enhance the overall experience. The inclusion of a custom sauna adds an element of spa-like luxury to the suite, providing the homeowners with a private retreat where they can relax and unwind.

In addition to the master suite, the lower level also includes new deck areas that extend the living space outdoors. These outdoor spaces, designed to take full advantage of the home’s stunning location, provide additional areas for relaxation and entertainment. By expanding the outdoor living areas, we were able to enhance the home’s connection to its natural surroundings—a key principle of mid-century modern design.

Opening Up the Main Living Spaces

One of the most significant changes we made to the layout of the home was the removal of a wall between the kitchen and the living room. This modification allowed us to create an open-concept great room, a space where the family can gather, cook, and entertain. The new layout not only improves the flow of the home but also maximizes the stunning ocean views that can be seen from the main living areas.

The open-concept great room is a perfect example of how we blended mid-century modern design principles with contemporary living needs. The space is functional, with defined areas for cooking, dining, and lounging, yet it retains the open, airy feel that is characteristic of mid-century homes. Large windows and sliding glass doors allow natural light to flood the space, further enhancing the connection between the indoors and outdoors.

To enhance the seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, we installed NanaWall systems throughout the home. These glass walls can be fully opened, creating a direct connection to the outdoor decks and gardens. The NanaWall systems not only provide stunning views of the surrounding landscape but also allow for natural ventilation, making the home more energy-efficient.

Modernizing Systems for Comfort and Sustainability

While much of the renovation focused on preserving the home’s architectural integrity, we also made significant upgrades to the home’s systems to ensure that it meets the needs of modern living. All of the home’s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were updated with energy-efficient solutions that reduce the home’s environmental impact while improving comfort.

One of the key upgrades we made was the installation of dual-pane low-e glazing in all of the windows and sliding doors. This type of glazing is designed to reduce heat transfer, keeping the home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The energy savings provided by these windows contribute to the home’s overall sustainability, reducing the homeowners’ reliance on heating and cooling systems.

In addition to the energy-efficient glazing, we also upgraded the home’s lighting systems with LED fixtures. These fixtures not only reduce energy consumption but also provide better illumination throughout the home. The new lighting system includes dimmable fixtures that allow the homeowners to adjust the lighting to suit different moods and activities.

To further improve the home’s energy efficiency, we incorporated passive design strategies such as natural daylighting and cross-ventilation. By maximizing the use of natural light and airflow, we reduced the need for artificial lighting and mechanical cooling. These passive design strategies not only enhance the home’s sustainability but also improve the overall comfort of the living spaces.
