Renowned Santa Barbara Architect Barry Berkus Passes at age 77

Barry Berkus: The Loss of a Hero

AB design studio is very sorry to hear that Barry Berkus, long-time resident of Santa Barbara and internationally renowned architect, passed away last Friday. Philanthropist, adventurer, author, and innovator, Berkus was named one of the world’s top 100 architects by Architectural Digest and one of the 100 most influential individuals of the past century in American housing by BuilderMagazine. We are inspired by his legacy and will continue to follow his advice: “Go where life takes you and run hard. Passion is what’s going to take you to the other end.”

I was very sad to hear of Barry's passing this last week. I have had the opportunity of meeting Barry at various stages of my career and I always found him to be generous and exciting! With his passing I have come to find out many more of his lifelong adventures and projects. By my estimation, Barry is Santa Barbara's brightest Architect Star. His greatness will continue to inspire us and his legacy will be with us for a long time to come. My thoughts are with Barry's family and closest friends.

It has been hard to understand the magnitude of losing such a prominent architect as part of our community. I am sure this will take time to fully understand. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Barry's family and friends.
